Heritage walk at Akhnoor during Navratra Festival - 2010
Akhnoor (Jammu), October 10 - A Heritage Walk from Ambaran to Jio Pota was organized today at Akhnoor as a part of the ongoing Navratra Festival - 2010 celebrations. The Heritage Walk was flagged off by Director Tourism, Jammu from Ambaran. Students drawn from Govt. Boys Higher Secondary School, Akhnoor, Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School, Aknoor and NCC Cadets, Akhnoor participated in the Heritage Walk.

Speaking on the occasion, the Director Tourism underscored the importance of the ancient sites of Akhnoor and highlighted the efforts being made by the department for showcasing it as a tourist destination for leisure and heritage tourists. He also appreciated the cooperation extended by the local administration and the education department in organizing the heritage walks every year to make the young generation aware about the richness of the Dogra heritage. He asked the students to become the ambassadors to disseminate the information about historical importance of the place wherever they go. Archeologist, Archeological Survey of India, also spoke on the occasion and educated the participants about the historicity of Ambaran and the Akhnoor Fort and the richness of the heritage of Akhnoor. He informed the gathering that the Ambaran site on the banks of the river Chenab is one of the oldest Buddist sites in the world and one of the few where a stupa has been excavated. The Akhnoor Fort site is of even greater anitiquity as it dates back to the times of the Indus Valley Civilisation, he added
The Heritage Walk started from the Ambaran all along the Chenab river front walkway going past the Gurdwara Sahib, the Pandav Gufa, the Akhnoor Fort and culminated at the Jio Pota temple Ghat which is also the site of the coronation of Maharaja Gulab Singh.
The school children and the cadets displayed great enthusiasm while predicating in the walk.
